History

The first known mention of the Greenbelt Municipal Swim Team is a short item in the July 11, 1957 issue of the Greenbelt News Review. The August 1st issue of that year mentions regular practices and the results of the first meet were reported on September 5th: a loss to Rosemary Hills by a score of 84-74. Reminiscences of that first team, as well as a picture of the inaugural seven members, appear in the July 26, 2007 issue. After a brief mention of swim team practice on June 26, 1958, the next documentation comes in 1959 when Greenbelt was a charter member of the Prince-Mont Swim League. Of the eight teams that first year — Cheverly, Gateway West, Greenbelt, Hillandale, Oxon Hill, Pleasant View, Rosemary Apts., and the Silver Spring “Y” — only Cheverly and Greenbelt have been continual members of the league since.
